Anaesthetic Services

The Women’s Hospital provides a wide range of safe and high quality patient care in anaesthesia, acute pain management, and intensive care support. Pre- peri- and post operative care is provided for over 12,000 patients per year, labour analgesia for over 7,000 parturients a year and anaesthesia for over 2,000 patients needing Caesarean Sections.



The analgesia requirements of every patient undergoing major surgery are managed through the Acute Pain Service. The Adult High Dependency Unit (HDU), cares for the sickest adult patients in the hospital and provides emergency HDU cover 24 hours a day.

Hours and days of service operation


An anaesthetic registrar is on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

An anaesthetic consultant is always available. The Consultant attends the hospital between 7.30am and 5.30pm weekdays and can attend outside these times as necessary.

The Anaesthetics Department Office is attended between 8.00am and 5.00pm Monday to Friday.
