The Royal Women’s Hospital offers information and support to women who have given birth at the Women’s, or whose baby has been admitted to our neonatal unit, who are experiencing breastfeeding problems.
Our Breastfeeding Education & Support Service (BESS), is staffed by experienced lactation consultants who are able to provide information and support for breastfeeding problems.
BESS caters for breastfeeding mothers and babies up to three months, who were born at the Women’s, or who were cared for in our neonatal unit. Due to space constraints and privacy issues, partners and other children cannot be accommodated.
We offer an outpatient clinic from Monday to Friday, with appointments allowing time for one breastfeed. For women with chronic or complicated breastfeeding issues, BESS also provides appointments on Friday afternoons for short visits to either the lactation consultant midwife or the lactation consultant general practitioner.
Telephone consultations with the duty lactation consultant are available.
