The Royal Women's Hospital offers education and support to families who are experiencing breastfeeding problems for women who have given birth at the Women’s or whose baby has been admitted to our neonatal unit.

The Royal Women’s Hospital offers information and support through our Breastfeeding Education & Support Service (BESS), for women who have given birth at the Women’s, or whose baby has been admitted to our neonatal unit.
BESS is staffed by experienced lactation consultants who provide information and support for breastfeeding problems. We offer appointments – allowing time for one breastfeed – in the BESS clinic, Monday to Friday.
For women with chronic or complicated breastfeeding issues, we also offer an outpatient clinic on Friday afternoons to see either the lactation consultant midwife, or the lactation consultant general practitioner.
BESS caters for breastfeeding mothers and babies up to three months. Due to space constraints and privacy issues, partners – and other children – cannot be accommodated. However, we are happy to meet with partners at the end of the appointment to work through the lactation plan together.
Telephone consultations with the duty lactation consultant are also available from 8.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday. Bookings for clinic and telephone consultations are essential.
