Comfort Momoh Lecture Series - The Women's

The Royal Women's Hospital sponsored Dr Comfort Momoh, a specialist midwife from the UK, to deliver a series of lectures in April 2009, focusing on the clinical care of women and communities affected by Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

Dr Comfort Momoh, is a specialist midwife in the field of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and public health from Guy’s and St Thomas' Hospital, London. In 2008 Dr Momoh was awarded an MBE for services to nursing and women’s healthcare.

Dr Momoh began her career as a nurse and, over the past 27 years, has achieved numerous academic and professional accolades in the field of FGM. In 1997, Dr Momoh set up the African Well Women’s Clinic at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, one of the first clinics in the UK dedicated to caring for women from FGM affected communities.

Throughout her career, Dr Momoh has lobbied the British parliament on issues relating to FGM and has acted in an advisory capacity to Members of Parliament and Committees. In 1999 she served as a temporary advisor to the World Health Organization in Geneva and in 2001 represented the United Kingdom at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York to present on FGM.

Dr Momoh has provided expert witness advice on immigration cases for asylum seekers relating to FGM for the International Institute of Boston-USA-January 2003, Minnesota and in the UK.

Dr Momoh has undertaken research on women's experience and the role culture plays in the practice of FGM and in 2007 received the Florence Nightingale Scholarship to carry out comparative research in Africa, looking at the sexual inequality of women who have undergone FGM.

Dr Momoh serves on an inter-agency FGM working group for Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham, organising and delivering FGM training seminars, workshops and study days to health professionals at local, national and international levels.

Dr Momoh is the vice-president of the European Network on FGM and other traditional practices (EURONET) and is currently the national coordinator for developing an action plans to prevent and eliminate FGM in the European Union

She is Chairperson for the Black Women's Health and Family Support, a non-governmental organisation working and supporting the African community in the UK.

Since 2007, Dr Momoh has been an honorary lecturer at King’s College London.
