Gonadotrophin Releasing Hormone Analogues (GnRH) CPG


Indications for use


Severe endometriosis
  • to reduce vascularity or reduce symptoms prior to surgery

Fibroids (>3cm diameter on ultrasound)
  • to induce shrinkage prior to surgery

Chronic pelvic pain
  • as a test to assess likely success of hysterectomy / oophorectomy

Ovarian entrapment
  • as a test to assess likely success of oophorectomy

Dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB)
  • endometrial preparation prior to endometrial ablation

To protect ovarian function
  • prior to radiotherapy / chemotherapy

Maximum length of treatment


Endometriosis
6 months
Fibroids
3 months
Chronic pelvic pain
3 months
Ovarian entrapment
3 months
Dysfunctional uterine bleeding
6 months
To protect ovarian function
6 weeks

Treatment


Nafarelin nasal spray 200 micrograms, TWICE per day.
or
Goserelin depot injection 3.6mg, per month (if unable to tolerate nasal spray).

Procedure


All scripts for Gonadotrophin Releasing Hormone (GnRH) must:
  • be signed by the appropriate head of unit; and
  • have the indication for use
