Program

The graduate year for midwives at the Women’s is a magnificent opportunity to put knowledge into practice.

You will have endless opportunities to care for women and their babies from:
  • many varied backgrounds
  • different social status
  • with a range of beliefs and expectations
  • challenged with physical and obstetric conditions
  • and involved in family dynamics different to your own.

The Women’s wants midwives who are passionate about caring for women, who can work harmoniously within a team and who can enjoy the challenge of developing themselves as individuals while also developing as midwives.

Duration

Part time or full time employment for 52 weeks (minimum 0.8 EFT), with commencement February 2009.

Clinical opportunities

Graduate midwives participate in TeamCare and gain experience in the provision of care for women during pregnancy, labour and birth and the postnatal period.

The TeamCare Model focuses on continuity of care/carers and promotes true collegiality between disciplines in the care of birthing women.

Professional and personal development

Nine study days and tutorials are offered. These provide opportunities for debriefing and education – including reviews of ‘must know’ topics and topics that promote creative midwifery and nursing practice.

The Women's offers an abundance of learning opportunities - we provide a comprehensive range of services available to women, many specialist practitioners and a variety of education programs available to staff.

Support

  • The Program Coordinator’s role is to support, counsel and mentor graduate midwives.
  • A team of midwifery Clinical Facilitators and Preceptors are willing and able to guide in the clinical setting. The Clinical Facilitators role is to orientate, support and guide novice practitioners throughout the year.
  • A Preceptor is allocated to each new Graduate Midwife, and their role is to buddy with the Graduate Midwife and familiarise them with the clinical environment.
  • Each placement provides Graduate Midwives a supernumerary time appropriate to that area.
  • Network and hospital orientation.

Annual leave

Four weeks annual leave to be taken during the program to recharge your batteries. The remainder can be taken on completion.
