With the support of the Gynaecology Assessment Clinic, one of the Women's Nurse Practitioners, Cathy Watson, is undertaking clinical research as a part of her PhD. Her randomised, controlled trial investigates the use of a compound of garlic, allicin, and its potential in preventing recurrences of vulvovaginal candidiasis (thrush).
The Women's Pharmacy is providing assistance with the preparation of the placebos and intervention tablets.
A paper arising from this study has been accepted by Australian Family Physician and will be published in 2011. This research is expected to be completed by March 2012.

Previously, the Gynaecology Assessment Clinic completed a study of heavy vaginal bleeding. That project was undertaken in collaboration with the Murdoch Institute.
Phase 1 of the study benchmarked the existing Clinical Practice Guideline against the AGREE Collaboration, Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation. Phase 2 evaluated the applicability of the existing Nurse Practitioner Clinical Practice Guideline in clinical practice and Phase 3 evaluated Nurse Practitioner clinical skills in the Gynaecology Assessment Clinic. Phase 2 & 3 both incorporated a number of audit tools including a clinical audit of patient records and medical, ultrasound and patient questionnaires.
Findings from this research have been translated into clinical practice in the Gynaecology Assessment Clinic through collaborative review of the Nurse Practitioner Clinical Practice Guideline.
