James King

Perinatal Epidemiologist,
Department of Perinatal Medicine



Associate Professor James Forrester King,
MBBS, LM, MPH, FRCSC, FRCOG, FRANZCOG.



After basic training in Melbourne, Associate Professor James King undertook postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in London and Dublin, and Maternal/Fetal Medicine in Vancouver. He studied perinatal epidemiology at McMaster University and the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit, Oxford.

Following a career in clinical obstetrics, since 1995, he has focussed his career on perinatal epidemiology and currently holds the positions of Perinatal Epidemiologist in the Department of Perinatal Medicine at the Royal Women's Hospital, Melbourne, and Chair of the Hospital’s Perinatal Mortality and Morbidity Committee.

From 2000 to 2007, he held the position of Chair of the Victorian Consultative Council on Obstetric and Paediatric Mortality and Morbidity (VCCOPMM), which oversees a broad range of maternal-child public health surveillance programs. He is currently Consultant Perinatal Epidemiologist to VCCOPMM.

James is the Chairman of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare National Maternal Mortality Advisory Committee, and was a co-author of the reports on maternal mortality in Australia 2000-2002, and 2003-2005.

He is also the Chair of the Australian and New Zealand Stillbirth Alliance, a multidisciplinary group working towards reducing the burden of stillbirth, by increasing public awareness and through research and improvements in clinical care.
