Dr Joanne Said commenced in the Pregnancy Research Centre in 2001 as a Clinical Research Fellow. Her clinical research goal is to improve health outcomes for both mother and fetus by advancing understanding of the aetiology, contributing factors and possible therapeutic strategies in pregnancy specific disorders. Jo completed her PhD studies in 2008. She is a RANZCOG certified subspecialist in Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

Jo’s interests are in Pregnancy Specific Disorders (Pre-eclampsia, Fetal Growth Restriction, Stillbirth, Recurrent Miscarriage) with a specific interest in mechanisms controlling coagulation within the maternal, placental and fetal circulations


Jo's research interests include:


Inherited Thrombophilia and Pregnancy Outcome
Prospective cohort study to determine the prevalence of inherited thrombophilias and risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes in asymptomatic nulliparous women.

MATAP project: Metaanalysis of Thrombophilia and Adverse Pregnancy Outcome
(Collaborative project overseen by Dr Marc Rodger of Ottawa)

TIPPS study: Thrombophilia in Pregnancy Prophylaxis Study
(RWH site coordinator for this multicentre, international study)

Placental Thrombosis Project
(in collaboration with Dr Murthi, Prof Brennecke, Prof Monagle and Dr Ignjatovic)
Investigation of role of proteoglycans in maintaining anticoagulation in the placental circulations


Homeobox genes and fetal growth restriction
(in collaboration with Dr Murthi, Dr Kalionis and Prof Brennecke)
Providing clinical analysis of case studies


Pericool (perineal cooling) project
(in collaboration with Dr East and colleagues)
Providing obstetric input to study
