Clinical Services

The Health Sciences Library provides access to published information to support patient care, education, research and management at the Women’s.

In June 2008 the Library relocated to Parkville and is now a shared service based at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Core subjects include: obstetrics, gynaecology, reproductive health, perinatology, neonatology, genetics, and women's health.

Books
Search for medical textbooks, reports, statistics, historical materials and audiovisual items in the combined libraries catalogue.
Databases
Search for any subject within medical and allied health literature via library databases.
Journals
Access the fulltext content of print and electronic journals via the journal portal.
E-books
Read fulltext electronic books and reports via e-books.
Evidence
Access a comprehensive range of evidence-based medicine sources via the library's Evidence Direct website.
Standards
Access a selection of Australian standards online. New titles can be unlocked as required for Hospital business.
Newspapers
Read daily newspapers in the Library.

Inter-library loan
Obtain a book or journal article not held by the Library.
Literature search
Request a librarian-assisted search of medical and allied health literature databases.
Evidence Direct
Obtain expert Clinical Librarian assistance with searching and evaluating evidence-based information to support patient care and research activities.
Resource purchase
Obtain a book or journal for a Department, or recommend a purchase for the Library collection.
Alerts & updates
Be informed about new publications and information resources in your areas of interest.
Library training
Book individual or group training sessions to optimize your use of Library services and resources.

Facilities



Computers
Library computers allow access by authorised persons to:
  • library web-based services;
  • medical literature databases and fulltext electronic journals;
  • Internet and Hospital Intranet;
  • web-based email (time-limited);
  • Melbourne University network (requires a University login).

Other use (eg. word processing, PowerPoint) is not supported.

Bookings may be necessary to obtain Library computer access during busy times.

Output options include:
  • printing to a shared client printer (costs 10 cents per page);
  • output to a personal USB removable flash drive.

Photocopying and computer printing
Your library card may be used to print and photocopy in the Library.
  • Add credit to your card using the Autoloader located near the photocopiers.
  • Black/white copying costs 10 cents per page.

For Hospital employees copying Library materials for Departmental business, a Departmental copy card may be available - check with your Department or at the library counter.

Colour copying is available via a separate system and costs $1.50 per A4 sheet.
