The Women’s is committed to providing training and experience in a supportive environment to meet the needs of each doctor.

It’s a great place to work and train in clinical fields related to Women’s Health.

The Women’s has the largest training program in
Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Victoria, leading to Diploma or Fellowship, and in all of the recognised sub-speciality programs Urogynaecology, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Ultrasound, Gynaecological Oncology and Reproductive Medicine of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

The size and breadth of the services provided in obstetrics and gynaecology ensures trainees have exposure to the broadest range of general and specialist services and teaching, training and supervision from consultants who are recognised experts in their field.

Training opportunities in
Neonatology are available at HMO, Registrar and Fellow levels in well structured training programs in the largest Neonatal Intensive and Special Care Unit in Melbourne and in the Newborn Emergency Transport Service.

Unique opportunities for training in
Anaesthetics, Psychiatry, Obstetric Medicine, Radiology and Emergency Medicine, all with special focus on women’s health and maternity, are available at the Women’s.

In 2009 we undertook a survey of junior medical staff across the hospital to seek feedback on their roles, support, teaching and training experience.

Junior doctors feel supported and valued and enjoy working at the Women’s.

Overwhelmingly they reported to us that:
  • they felt supported by and have a positive relationship with Senior Medical Staff
  • they felt staff worked well together, that they are treated with respect and when they do a good job it is acknowledged
  • an amazing 100% of respondents reported a positive working relationship with peers and other staff.

Junior doctors feel as though they learn a lot and have many training opportunities. (We are committed to protected training time for registrars).

  • they felt that the Women’s was committed to their training
  • they appreciated the appropriateness of the level of clinical supervision and the availability of supervision when they needed it.

Ninety percent of respondents agreed the Women’s was a great place to work and 95% reported pride in being a part of the hospital.

They told us that the best thing things about working at the Women’s were:
  • the Women’s committed and friendly staff
  • good location in the brand new state of the art hospital in Parkville
  • the complex cases which provided learning experience
  • the opportunities to participate in research
  • the experience of working in a tertiary hospital.

The Women’s has been providing specialist care to women and newborn babies for over 150 years.

We have a special place in health care in Victoria, providing not only high quality clinical care to women and babies but also acting as an advocate for women’s health in the broadest sense. Clinical services are provided within a social model of health framework.

Doctors from countries outside Australia who are interested in undergoing a period of training at the Women’s should carefully review the information available on this and other websites to ensure that they are eligible to practise in Australia.

Applications will only be accepted online.
