PCOS Glossary

Acanthosis nigricans
Dark skin patches on the back of the neck or under the armpits or in skin creases
Alopecia
Thinning or balding of the hair on the head
Androgens
Any hormone that stimulates male characteristics, i.e. testosterone.
Blood lipids
Fats found in blood including cholesterol and triglycerides
Insulin resistance
Insulin not able to work well so the body must produce more, leading to high blood levels, or hyperinsulinaemia
Carbohydrate
Sugar or starch in food that is broken down to glucose in blood
Diabetes
Increased blood glucose levels
Hirsutism
Excessive hair growth on the face and body
Ovulation
The release of the ripe egg from the ovary
Endometrial hyperplasia
Thickening of the endometrial wall (lining of the uterus) which may increase the risk of cancer if not treated
Sleep apnoea
Breathing problems while sleeping
