Pregnancy Research Centre
Staff and Student Achievements
2012 was a milestone year for the Pregnancy Research Centre (PRC)
Not only did the PRC celebrate its 20th anniversary, it also recorded a number of other highlights…..
- The PRC’s publication count reached and then surpassed the 500 mark, which represents an average publication rate of one per fortnight since its opening in 1993.
- Supported by a grant from the NHMRC, the PRC commenced the world’s first randomised controlled trial (FLAMINGO) on the use of fetal scalp blood lactate estimations in labour to reduce caesarean section rates.
- The PRC became the leading recruitment site in the Pacific region for the international multicentre PROGNOSIS study which is investigating the clinical utility of the novel biomarkers sFlt and PIGF for the prediction of short-term outcome in pregnant women with suspected preeclampsia
- The amount of extramural funding secured to support the research activities of the PRC since its opening in 1993 reached $14 million, a very competitive total given the size of the PRC
- At the XVIII biennial World Congress of the International Society of Hypertension in Pregnancy (ISSHP), held in Geneva in July 2012, the PRC’s NIH funded study examining the genetic basis of pre-eclampsia (the important hypertensive disorder of human pregnancy) was the recipient of the Society’s Zuspan Award, which is given to the investigators adjudged to have undertaken and then presented at an ISSHP congress the most outstanding scientific work in relation to the study of hypertension in pregnancy. The competition for the award was strong, with some 300 submissions to the Congress from all corners of the globe being considered for it. Receipt of the award reflects well therefore on the work of the PRC and its collaborators in this area. It is also of note that the Zuspan Award at the 2006 ISSHP World Congress in Lisbon was awarded to another study from the PRC, namely, Dr Joanne Said’s work on inherited thrombophilias and pregnancy outcomes. To have secured such a prestigious international award at two of the past four ISSHP Congresses is testimony to the quality of the research undertaken by the PRC staff and students.
