Return to Practice for Nurses and Midwives

The Royal Women's Hospital conducts a free return to practice (RTP) program for registered nurses and midwives.

The course is based on the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) guidelines of a minimum on 240 hours and a maximum of 480 hours including 80 hours theory. The Clinical Assessment Tool provided based on the Australian Nursing Midwifery Council (ANMC), National Competency Standards (NCS) for the Registered Nurse and Midwife are required to be completed and signed off and sent to the NBV for approval prior to re-registration occurring.

Program criteria


The applicant must:
  • Demonstrate that their Registration/endorsement has lapsed for a period of less then 10 years.
  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia
  • Have a letter from the NMBA stating that they must complete a RTP Nursing or RTP Midwifery course. This letter is valid for 2 years from the date of issue
  • Submit a curriculum vitae with a covering letter including contact details for two clinical referees to clinical.education@thewomens.org.au
  • Provide evidence of current reflective reading in nursing and/or midwifery.
  • Attend an interview conducted by the RTP/IRON Nursing and RTP/IRON Midwifery co-ordination team.
  • Successfully complete the Women’s medicine's management competency package.
  • Successfully complete the Women’s midwifery assessment (midwives only).
  • Be able to attend all scheduled study days.
  • Be able to attend at least three days a week for clinical experience, to ensure adequate clinical supervision.
  • All participants must practice under the supervision of a registered nurse or a registered midwifery qualification (for midwifery areas).
  • In consultation with the course coordinator participants must have formulated an initial learning contract within one week of commencement of the course. Participants should work with the course coordinator RTP/IRON Nursing and RTP/IRON Midwifery co-ordination team and/or their preceptor to ensure that they are meeting these learning goals.
  • It is required and expected that participants supplement their clinical shifts by investigation of current and evidence-based research (self directed learning).
  • All applicants are required to have a working with children's check and undergo a police check that is arranged by the Women’s HR Department prior to commencing the course.

Study days


The course theory will be conducted over 10 study days (8 hours a day). Week one of the course will be 5 study days and then one study day for 5 weeks. The participants will also be expected to attend clinical days in the same week.


Assessment


Course assessment is based on the ANMC NCS for the Registered Nurse or Midwife. The Clinical Assessment Tool provided by the NBV used to assess participants competence must to be completed and signed off and approved by the NBV before re-registration can occur.

The Women’s designates that participants of the RTP Nursing and RTP Midwifery must successfully complete mandatory and recommended competencies.
