Our History

Do you have a precious memory of the Royal Women’s Hospital you would like to share? Perhaps an important moment in your life, or maybe you remember working at the Women's?

Perhaps several generations of your family have given birth or have otherwise been cared for at the Women's? If so, we would love to hear from you.

The Royal Women's Hospital was located at the Carlton site for over 150 years. For century and a half, hundreds of thousands of women and newborn babies were cared for there.

And tens of thousands of staff have worked hard to provide the very best in care at Australia's oldest and largest specialist women's hospital.

In June 2008, the Royal Women’s Hospital moved to a brand new
state-of-the-art facility in Parkville. The Women’s is now collecting memories from those who were cared for, or who worked, at the Carlton site.
In 1858, the 'Lying-in Hospital' was relocated and opened in Madeline St, North Melbourne (now known as Swanston St, Carlton). Photographer unknown.

We know that our Carlton site held precious memories for many people and the move to our new hospital in Parkville signifies the end of an era and the beginning of a new and exciting time for the Women’s.

If you would like to share your memory, please email our community newsletter editor or by post to Community Newsletter Editor, Royal Women's Hospital, Locked Bag 300, Parkville, VIC 3052. Please include a contact number and/or postal address.

On Thursday 22 May 2008, community members and former staff were invited to drop into the Yvonne Bowden Auditorium at the Royal Women's Hospital to say goodbye to the Carlton site.

Memories may be utilised by the Women’s for promotional purposes; all names will be confidential and will not be published. Author’s of memories that are selected for use (as above) will be contacted, prior to use.
