The Royal Women's Hospital has introduced safer work practices that will benefit both staff and patients. The new system, known as the Smart Move Smart Lift (SMSL) will improve your care by making sure you are handled safely and efficiently by staff during your hospital stay. To make it work, staff and patients need to work together.
As part of the SMSL policy, staff can no longer lift patients in a way that puts stress and strain on their back. Staff will encourage you to assist, as much as possible, in any procedures that involve moving you.
We also aim to work with you to make you as independent as possible. Your active involvement will help to improve your mobility and may speed your recovery.
When you are first admitted to hosptial we will assess your ability to sit in bed, stand and walk. A nurse who is involved in your care will continue to assess you throughout your stay in hospital.
Should you need assistance to move on or off the bed, the staff will use various devices (which are explained below) to ensure you move comfortably and safely.
These devices also help to significantly decrease injuries to staff.
