The new world-class Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) to be built at Parkville will see the next generation of advances in the prevention, detection and treatment of cancer. It will be the first centre of its kind in Victoria.
|
The VCCC will bring together eight recognised leaders in research, cancer treatment and education and training to create the largest clinical and research cancer centre in Australia. An incorporated joint venture has been formed and members are already collaborating.
All members retain their existing identity and independence while gaining access to the shared research and education facilities.
The eight members of the Victorian CCC are:
|
- The Royal Women’s Hospital
- Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
- Melbourne Health (which includes The Royal Melbourne Hospital)
- The University of Melbourne
- Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research
- The Royal Children’s Hospital
- St Vincent's Melbourne, and
- Western Health
|
|
The VCCC will drive leadership and innovation, with the largest concentration of cancer clinicians and researchers in the southern hemisphere and ranking among the top ten cancer centres in the world.
The centre will accelerate the translation of research discoveries into new treatments and ensure that Victoria has a strong specialist cancer workforce by educating and training current and future cancer clinicians and researchers.
Co-location and sharing facilities will provide new opportunities for members to work together and collaborate more broadly with other cancer services across metropolitan and regional Victoria. The VCCC will provide a resource for the entire state and ensure that Victorians have access to the best possible cancer care, as close to home as possible.
The new facility will include:
|
- 160 overnight inpatient cancer beds
- 110 same-day treatment beds
- Eight refurbished medi-hotel beds, with additional space for overnight accomodation for families of country patients
- Eight radiation therapy bunkers
- Education and training facilities
- Clinical research capacity will be enhanced with more than 25,000 square metres of research space capable of accommodating hundreds of researchers and a dedicated clinical trials facility offering 24 treatment places

Management, costs and funding
|
All health services will continue to be publicly operated by the Department of Health.
The project will be delivered as a public private partnership (PPP) in accordance with both the National PPP guidelines and the Partnerships Victoria policy.
The Plenary Health consortium will design, build, finance and maintain the centre’s facilities, with responsibility of all core clinical, research and education services to be retained by the project members, including the State.
The Department of Health (DH) is leading the procurement of the VCCC, in conjunction with the Department of Business and Innovation DBI).
The 1 billion plus in capital costs of the project will be funded by Commonwealth and State contributions, with additional funds coming from the sale of surplus land, partner contributions and philanthropic donations.
The Women’s is not required to fundraise for capital costs of the project.

Access during construction
|
The majority of the VCCC facilities will be located on the former Royal Dental Hospital site (at the intersection of Flemington Road, Elizabeth and Grattan Streets), opposite the Women’s and the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Some existing facilities at the Royal Melbourne Hospital will also be extended and refurbished.
Construction began in 2011 and will be completed by the end of 2015.
During construction, part of Grattan Street will be closed to traffic, between Flemington and Royal Parade for safety purposes. Traffic will be directed around the site, to ensure access to the Women’s car park and emergency entrance.
