The Royal Women's Hospital is a public health care facility. All patients who use this facility must have a Medicare card. Any patients who do not have a Medicare card or are not eligible for Medicare benefits will need to organise payment with our Patient Accounts Department before receiving care and services.
Patient accounts
If you do not have a Medicare card or Private Health Insurance the Patient Accounts Department will provide you with an invoice before your consultation. You will need to pay this account at the Women's Cashiers office. The Cashiers are located on the ground floor. For patients attending the Women's Community Clinics or patients attending the hospital out of business hours, invoices will be posted.
If you are having elective surgery, the Women's Patient Accounts Department and Private Patient Liaison Officer can give you more information about costs. All elective surgery patients need to pay before the surgery takes place.
For more information contact the Women's Patient Accounts Department.
Private health insurance
Patients with private health insurance need to visit the Patient Accounts Department and sign claim forms before each appointment at the Women's. An invoice will be sent directly to your private health fund for reimbursement. If you do not sign a claim form, any charges incurred for your treatment will need to be paid for by you. This also applies to any charges not reimbursed by your health fund.
Reciprocal rights
If you are a resident of a country that has a health care agreement with Australia (known as a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement) you are entitled to limited subsidised health services for medically necessary treatment. This means any ill-health or injury which occurs while you are visiting Australia and requires treatment before you go home; it does not include planned or elective treatment.
Patients who may be eligible for reciprocal rights will also need to visit the Patient Accounts Department and show a current passport. If you wish to confirm your entitlement under the Reciprocal Rights Health Care agreements please contact Medicare. Visitors to Australia on student visas are not eligible for assistance.
Any enquiries regarding eligibility and applications for a Reciprocal Rights Medicare Card are to be directed to Medicare on 13 20 11.
