A general gynaecology clinic specialising in the investigation and treatment of abnormal/heavy/infrequent/absent bleeding which may be caused by fibroids, polyps or endometriosis.
The clinic also offers counselling regarding impact of fibroids on patients’ fertility as well as a wide range of up-to-date treatment options.
The clinic is affiliated with clinical research through the University of Melbourne into causes of heavy menstrual bleeding and fibroids and has a nationally-accredited advanced laparoscopy training unit for the Australian Gynaecological Endoscopy Society in addition to other level 6 laparoscopic surgeons.
Specialities
- Investigation and treatment of abnormal/heavy/infrequent/absent bleeding which may have been caused by fibroids, polyps, endometriosis, adenomyosis, Asherman’s syndrome, anatomical abnormalities, PCOS
- Multidisciplinary surgical approach with colorectal and urology teams when required
- Counselling and discussion of complex fibroid diseases including intravenous leiomyomatosis, benign fibroid variants, and potential for leiomyosarcoma
- Open and laparoscopic myomectomies where appropriate
- Open and laparoscopic hysterectomies where appropriate
- Operative laparoscopies and open surgeries for ovarian pathology and benign tumours e.g. cystectomies
- Operative management of endometriosis
- Endometrial ablations by first or second generation treatment methods
- Hysteroscopic resection of fibroids and polyps
Clinical inclusion
- Patients referred by their family doctor with abnormal and/or heavy and/or infrequent/absent periods for investigation, or known fibroids
- Patients referred by other clinics for management of their abnormal bleeding problems or discussion regarding fibroid management

Frequency
Major Clinic once a week with a follow-up post-operative clinic once a week, as well as weekly pre-operative clinics. There are several operating sessions throughout the week.
Triage
Please provide as much detail as possible on presenting complaint, pre referral management, outcomes, investigations and results.
- Abnormal or heavy bleeding causing anaemia or requirement for blood transfusion
- Imaging evidence showing fibroid size greater than 6cm causing symptoms such as heavy bleeding, increased pressure on bladder or bowel, or pain
- Symptomatic fibroids in patients >35 years of age currently attempting to conceive

- Copies of recent full blood count
- Iron studies
- TSH
- Pelvic ultrasound report and films
- Cervical screening test results
* If the patient has seen a specialist regarding the same problem, information from that consultation should also be brought to clinic.
Urgent referral
Contact the Fellow or senior registrar via Main Reception.
Appointment
An acknowledgement letter will be sent directly to the patient and the GP will be notified. The patient will then receive a letter with the appointment details.
