The Women’s has proudly launched its 2024 Research Report, Research for Change. The report celebrates the ground-breaking work taking place. It highlights the hospital’s commitment to improving health outcomes for women and newborns through evidence-based care, innovation, and collaboration.
At a special launch event, CEO Sue Matthews reflected on the unique role of the Women’s as a specialist tertiary hospital.
“Research is the engine of change,"
"It’s how we challenge outdated norms, improve outcomes, and drive meaningful change in the lives of women and newborns.”-Professor Sue Matthews
Dr Nicola Yuen, Chief Medical Officer, presented highlights from the report. She reinforced the hospital’s embedded research model. “Our ability to translate research into practice in real time is what sets us apart,” she said. “It means our patients benefit directly from the latest evidence and innovation.”
The event featured presentations from leading researchers whose work is showcased in the report. This included A/Prof Wan Tinn Teh who spoke about making fertility care fairer for everyone. Prof Martha Hickey shared her work on menopause and how it’s changing public understanding. Lastly, Prof Peter Rogers talked about his ground-breaking research into endometriosis.
A highlight of the event was the deeply moving story shared by Michelle and Matthew. Their son Albert spent time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Their personal experience brought to life the real-world impact of research and care at the Women’s. It reminded us why research matters, not just in theory, but in the lives of families every day. Their courage touched everyone in the room.
This year’s report was brought to life by a First Nations designer, Rareland. This is a meaningful step in embedding inclusion and respect into everything the hospital does.
The launch was supported by HESTA, whose partnership continues to help power the hospital’s research efforts.
