The Royal Women's Hospital

The Women’s is an established provider of abortion and contraception services and provides training and information to practitioners in the primary and secondary care sectors.

Early medical abortion online training

This free, online training module was created by the Royal Women’s Hospital as part of our Sexual and Reproductive Health Clinical Champion program. Funded by the Victorian Department of Health, the training is available on the Women’s Health Victoria website.

The training will support the learning needs of a range of healthcare workers – including GPs, nurses, midwives, nurse practitioners and social workers – about how to best provide sensitive and non-judgemental care.

Centre for Excellence in Rural and Sexual Health

The vision of CERSH is that all rural Victorians have access to quality sexual health care, information and support that is tailored to their individual needs.

The CERSH Health Practitioner Resource Hub for Abortion & Contraception Care offers a selection of key resources, tools and materials to support clinicians working in the domain of abortion and contraception care. Free accredited online training is available. 

Clinicians can join the Victorian Clinical Network for Abortion and Contraception Care. The network meets online each quarter.

1800 My Options

1800 My Options is a statewide, independent information and phone service that provides a database of abortion, options counselling, contraception and other sexual health service providers. Services may be listed publicly or privately. Sexual Health Victoria

Sexual Health Victoria (formerly Family Planning Victoria) focuses on reproductive and sexual health care, education and advocacy. Sexual Health Victoria aims to strengthen the primary care and community-led service system to deliver reproductive and sexual health services and support people to make decisions about their reproductive and sexual health and wellbeing that are right for them. 

Sexual Health Victoria offers a range of clinical resources on sexual health topics and courses in long acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) care. 

Children by Choice

Children by Choice is a Queensland-based advocacy, counselling and education organisation. They provide information and resources for health professionals who support women experiencing an unplanned pregnancy.

Australian Contraception and Abortion Primary Care Practitioner Support Network (AusCAPPS)

AusCAPPS is a NHMRC funded online community of practice developed in partnership with the RACGP, RANZCOG, APNA, the PSA and other key stakeholders for primary health care providers who are interested in increasing women's access to long acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) and medical abortion. GPs, practice nurses and pharmacists are invited to join. There is no cost to do so.

Medicare Benefits

A person who is currently pregnant or who has been pregnant in the preceding 12 months, and who is concerned about that pregnancy, may claim Medicare benefits for up to three non-directive pregnancy support counselling services. Services are provided by eligible GPs, and allied health professionals on referral from a GP. Find out more: Medicare.
