Maternity Emergency Program – clinical training

This interprofessional, simulation-based education program is designed for clinicians working in Level 2 to Level 4 maternity services.

It meets the requirements of Focus Area 1: Multidisciplinary Maternity Emergency Training under the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority (VMIA) Incentivising Better Patient Safety (IBPS) program. The program is currently delivered face-to-face.

Clinicians can consult with experienced Clinical Midwifery Educators to tailor the program to meet the specific needs of their service.

Program inclusions

  • Multidisciplinary clinical simulation training
  • Cord prolapse
  • Maternal collapse (including resuscitative hysterotomy)
  • Maternal sepsis
  • Obstetric anaesthetic emergencies
  • Pre-eclampsia/eclampsia
  • Postpartum haemorrhage
  • Shoulder dystocia
  • Twin birth
  • Uterine inversion
  • Vaginal breech birth
  • Teamwork resource management
  • Clinical skills stations (selected by service – see below)
  • Understanding escalation pathways
  • Quality and safety discussion and report

Clinical skills stations include (but are not limited to)

  • Artificial rupture of membranes
  • Cord prolapse
  • Episiotomy
  • Fetal scalp electrode application
  • Maternal collapse (ABLS)
  • Maternal sepsis
  • Postpartum haemorrhage (medication management)
  • Pre-eclampsia/eclampsia (magnesium sulphate administration)
  • Shoulder dystocia
  • Speculum examination
  • Uterine inversion
  • Vaginal breech birth
  • Vaginal examination
